Time Axis Manipulation. Three different artists (Silent Servant, Echospace and Redshape) were asked to remix Swedish experimental dub/drone act Mokira (Type, Raster Noton & Mille Plateaux). The stunning result is now released as three limited 10-inch records, including original track on a-side and remix on b-side. A full Mokira cd and digital album will accompany the vinyl releases.

Part I Time TrackThe Mokira Time Track is the deepest of dub music and electronic gear has seldom sounded this organic. Rolling cords and bassline builds slowly towards the dub meltdown. On the b-side Silent Servant (Sandwell District, Historia y Violencia) produces a rolling wall of sound. This is a high energy, metallic sounding dance piece ready to serve djs around the globe. To be played loud, not silent.

Part II Axis AudioMokira ones told Kontra-Musik that three analog tape echoes are needed to produce one Mokira track. When listening to the track Axis Audio you can hear why. Metallic bursts of sound hits like waves on an Irish shore in autumn. Kept together by a solid bassline and a fragile melody Axis Audio is an excursion in beautiful sounds. On the b-side, Echospace (Deepcord, Modern Love) makes you dance. It is distorted, it is minimal, it raw and last but last not least, it is oh so funky. This track will move dance floors. Be so sure.

Part III Manipulation MusikManipulation Musik is the darkest and most cinematic piece on this collection of EPs. Delicate manipulated melodies and melancholic strings moves in and out of a crackling and distorted soundscape, telling an experimental sound tale with a sad ending. On b-side Redshape (Present, Delsin) makes a remix solely using sounds from the original. Redshape described his tape dub version like this: think disco dub, plonk & pain. Not much to add to that it kind of says it all. Enjoy!

Mokira is the first and main alias from the Swedish producer Andreas Tilliander and releases are out on labels such as Raster-Noton, Mille Plateaux and Type. The music of Mokira could be described as electronic kraut, harsh ambient and the deepest dub. All recorded on vintage gear.

Kontra-Musik and Mokira would like to thank Echospace, Silent Servant and Redshape for investing their time and talent in this project and also for using the original parts and samples in such and extensive way. Another debut for the new Bass Culture release. For BCR013, we welcome Sweden’s Joel Alter.

As a trained Violinist and composer for the Swedish National Theatre, Joel’s first steps into the world of electronic composition came with an exotic mixture of classical influence and modern inspiration, from acts such as Depeche Mode, Jean-Michel Jarre and Front 242. A key figure on the Swedish music scene since 1995, Joel has always seen his music as stemming from the meeting of a variety of artforms. His first steps onto the international circuit came with the signing of material to Int. DeeJay Gigolo and Minus. Since then, he has developed a strong relationship with Hamburg label, Room With A View, featuring on seven releases since early 2009, as well as releasing on Berlin based label Sweatshop. It was January’s ‘Preaching To The Choir’ on Room With A View, a track that became a firm favourite with D’Julz, and included on his Rex Club compilation, that lead to a request for an EP for Bass Culture. The ‘Silence Is Golden’ EP is a broad, four track selection, showcasing the sounds and style of the Swede.

The deep, popping-bass and crescendo hitting keys of the title track, are supported by the excellent ‘I Feel You’. A track that, uses the most recognizable of vocal samples, in a highly respectful and fresh way. ‘Love, Hope and Change’ is a haunting slice of melancholy, that shines through its elegant, cascading piano. One grand debut deserves another, and Bass Culture welcomes Daniel Stefanik with his take on ‘Silence Is Golden’. The man from Leipzig reworks the original into a late-night tribal-tech number, using its silky keys to perfection and retaining its air of elegance.

Inspired by his various live performances, Upwellings presents here a perfect studio translation of his night in minimal and dub atmospheres.
