Artist: Egbert
Title: Vreugdevuur EP
Label: Cocoon Recordings
Released: 09.11.2009
Genre: Techno
Release Description:
Egbert Van Der Gugten is currently one of the most promising talents within the field of electronic dance music. Jeroen Verheji alias Secret Cinema, whose attention was drawn to Egbert via myspace.com, invited him on the spur of the moment to his parties and his studio last year, and thus smoothed the way for Egbert to the Dutch Techno scene. After his debut on Lo-Fi Stereo, it was mainly his “Vlammen-EP” on Michel de Hey’s EC Records in February 2009, which went down a bomb on the dancefloors and belonged to the basic vinyl inventory of Sven Väth’s record case in this season. With “Vreugdevuur”, Egbert still tops this and provides us with a musical exclamation mark that sets standards in harmonic but consequently demanding TechHouse somewhere in between Dub, Progressive House and Detroit. The subsonic bass around the central organ motif will be your companion in between dreaming and dancing in this late autumn, promised! A different sound approach is taken by the flipside “Groots Uitpakken” with its tremendously energetic wall of sound, a nocturnal trip through slow-motion vocal tatters, whose string breaks provide it with an irresistible pull.
Artist: Harvey McKay
Title: Disturb The Bird
Label: Soma Recordings
Released: 09.11.2009
Genre: Techno, Dub Techno
Release Description:
Harvey McKay has been doing all the right things recently, with releases and remixes on Material Series, Perc Trax, Cubism and of course Soma! In preparation for his debut album, we thought it was about time for his third EP on Soma, Disturb The Bird, to be unleashed. Keep an eye open for the album dropping in early December.
Title track, Disturb the Bird, is a full on techno masterpiece crossed with 90s style hardcore synths to form an aggressive and jacking piece of music. Wonderfully crisp highs, crunchy breakdowns and spacey pads take this track into a modern and eclectic blend of original thumping and dark techno.
On the remix is Harveys good friend and respected DJ and producer, Gary Beck. Gary takes the original and drives it into the darkest of corners, with a bassline that you cant help but feel scared by yet all the while combined with shuffling percussion and beautifully layered atmospheric pads. Put this on at 5am and you will soon have people reaching for their water bottles.
Third on the E.P is Vessel, which sees Harvey explore his clear wealth of musical ability and willingness not to be a one-genre man. Sparkling percussion slides around a groove-fuelled bassline before warm, uplifting pads take the track into a progressive yet stomping tech-house winner.
Finally is Melt, a track that leads on from the progressive aspects of Vessel, yet combines the irresistible high end percussion that encompasses this dynamic release.
